Join the Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida for a weekend of learning and music making led by clinician & conductor, Dr. James Kinchen.

James Benjamin Kinchen, Jr.

James Benjamin Kinchen, Jr., Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at University of Wisconsin-Parkside, is in frequent demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician.

Steeped in an environment that cherished and honored the contributions of African Americans to the choral experience from his childhood school days, Dr. Kinchen came to deeply value the choral music of African Americans as he became a mature choral artist.  He has done presentations on choral music by black composers -- "spirituals" and otherwise -- for colleagues at state, regional, and national conferences, as well as in countries like Cuba and India, and is respected for his expertise in the area.  He owes a special debt to composers, including William Dawson, Undine Smith Moore, and others, for the opportunity to work with and learn directly from them! Dr. Kinchen is an affiliate of the Center for Black Music Research, and holds membership in the National Association for Music Education.  He is Music Director of the Milwaukee Choristers, a large, self-sustaining community chorus since 1993, and serves on the music staff of Saint Paul Baptist Church, Racine.

The Chorale and festival registrants will sing a compilation of classical, gospel and spiritual music by black composers in honor of Black History Month. SingOut! is open for registration to all singers ages 15 & up.

Singers registered for the festival will rehearse all selected pieces during a clinic with Dr. Kinchen on Saturday, February 17th. The clinic will culminate in a concert with professional soloists and orchestra on Sunday, February 18th (please see details below):
